Generation No. 7 101. Eustace26 Stawell (William25, Eustace24, Jonas23, Jonas22, Anthony21, William20, Eustachius19, Edmund18, Thomas17, David16, Robert15, Walter14, Thomas13, Mathew12 de Stawell, Geoffery11, Geoffrey10, Mathew9, Geoffrey8, Henry7, Geoffery6, Adam5, Geoffery4 de Coveston, Adam3, Geoffery2, Adam1) was born Bef. 1761 in Coolmain, Ireland112, and died of Apoplexy Abt. 1836 in Coolmain, Ireland113. He married Mary Maria Griffith 14 December 1795 in Rathclaren Ireland, daughter of Rev. Richard Griffith. Notes for Eustace Stawell:
On 20 March 1784, Eustace Stawell, of Coolmain, County Cork, Esq. leased the domain of Coolmain to Benjamin Scott. On 16 August 1785, he was appointed Sequestrator of Kilmaloda, upon the resignation of Tisdall. On 14 February 1786, he presented his brother, the Rev. William Stawell, with the living of Kilmoloda, of which he was patron. Eustace was appointed a Justice of the Peace for the County of Cork on 28 June 1786. He is shown by the "Council Book of the City of Cork" to have been a counciler-at-Law on 27 September 1787, on which date he was admitted as a freeman of the city. He was shown in Watson Stewart's "Gentlemen's and Citizen's Almanac for 1809 as having been called to the Irish Bar at Michaelmas 1789, and in Wilson's "Dublin Directory" for 1823 he is shown as a barrister practicing at Bandon. In the "List of Officers of Yoemanry in Ireland" in 1797, Eustace Stawell appears as a First Lieutenant in the Kilbrittain troop of Cavalry, of which Sampson Stawell, of Kilbrittain was the Captain. His commission was dated 31 October 1796. He is mentioned in the will of Sampson Stawell, dated 21 June 1815, as his "kinsman and friend, Eustace Stawell". He was often present at Court of France, where he was known as "The Handsome Irishman". He was said to live very extravagantly, and to have spent most of the family fortune. Wenman says that Eustace willed a part of his estate to his daughters, the rest to be given to his father William as his heir and only male descendant113. Eustace Stawell died at Coolmain Castle of Apoplexy. Wenman Stawell recounts that he was seized while driving (sheep) and was carried into his house where he shortly after expired. It seems odd that, given the prominence of this individual, there is no date of death listed for Eustace in Col. Stawell's book. With the death of Eustace's son Eustace, the Coolmain branch of the Stawell family was considered to have become extinct in the male line. A key question here is whether, under English law, the lands and title of Eustace would have passed on to his nephew Lt. William Stawell, or to his three surviving daughters. More About Eustace Stawell: Children of Eustace Stawell and Mary Griffith are:
Notes for Eustace Stawell: Eustace died young s.p.
Notes for Ruth Stawell: Ruth died young.
Notes for Catherine Stawell: Catherine died unmarried.
Notes for Elizabeth Stawell: Elizabeth died unmarried.
Notes for Melian Georgina Stawell: Georgina wrote the letter, around 1836, to Lt. William Stawell in Nova Scotia, informing him of the death of her father (William's uncle). She died unmarried116.
@102. Rev. William26 Stawell (William25, Eustace24, Jonas23, Jonas22, Anthony21, William20, Eustachius19, Edmund18, Thomas17, David16, Robert15, Walter14, Thomas13, Mathew12 de Stawell, Geoffery11, Geoffrey10, Mathew9, Geoffrey8, Henry7, Geoffery6, Adam5, Geoffery4 de Coveston, Adam3, Geoffery2, Adam1)117 was born 1761 in Coolmain, Cork, Ireland118, and died 23 December 1837 in Bandon, Cork, Ireland119. He married (1) Charlotte Rogers120, daughter of Col. --- Rogers. She died 01 March 1822 in Dublin, Ireland120. He married (2) Mary O'Callaghan121. Notes for Rev. William Stawell: The Reverend William Stawell entered Tritity College in Dublin as a pensioner on 20 November 1780, and received his BA degree in 1785. He later received an MA degree from the smae college in 1805. On 22 MAy 1785 William was ordained a deacon by the Bishop of Clonfort and Kilmacdaugh at the Castle Chapel. On 16 January 1786 he received his Priest's Orders. He was appointed by his uncle Eustace Stawell Rector of Kilmaloda on 14 February, 1786, and remained at this post until he resigned 12 April 1811. Through his petitions, he was responsible for the commissioning of his son as an Ensign in the British Army. William is mentioned in the will of Sampson Stawell of Kilbrittain, dated 21 June 1815 as his "kinsman, the Rev. Stawell." Reveremd Stawell delivered the funeral sermon for Princess Charlotte. He was the author of a translation of Virgil's "Georgics". Wenman says that, as Rector of Kilaloda, he was said to be quite liberal in regards to the Catholics of the parish and refused to take tithes from them. His son and grandson believed that because of this he was never named a Bishop. Reverend Stawell was described by his grandson, Wenman Stawell, as a tall, strong, able-bodied man. Wenman recounts that once, having been offended by a pickpocket, he seized him and threw him across the street into a street cleaner122. In his book, "A Quantock Family", Col. George Dodsworth Stawell indicates that Rev. William's son William died without issue in 1798. This is in direct conflict with what we now know about the family. We have the Rev. Stawell's signature from a letter he wrote to the King in 1811. More About Rev. William Stawell: Degree 1: 1785, B.A, Trinity College, University of Dublin Degree 2: 1805, M.A. University of Dublin Notes for Charlotte Rogers: There is disagreement as to the first name of the second wife of the Reverend William Stawell. In his will, Wenman Stawell indicates that his grandmother's name was Charlotte Rogers, daughter of Colonel Rogers, born in County Cork and brother of a Colonel Rogers. In his book, Colonel George Dodsworth Stawell lists her as Eliza Rogers, who died on 1 March 1822 at the home of her brother, Major Rogers in Cork. We are thus faced with the question of which name is correct? Col. Stawell relies on the official pedigree of the Stawell family obtained by him by the Office of Arms in Dublin, Ireland in 1908 which approves the family's right to the Stawell Coat of Arms. He commissioned this because the Irish branch of the family had never officially registered their right to use the arms for their affairs. The resulting pedigree covered 13 generations beginning with Thomas Stawell of Hatherleigh, County Devon, County Devon who died on 10 October, 1516. These pedigrees were considered vital in Great Britain, because they were used to prove inheritances and legal claims of Noble Title. In Genealogy it is considered one of the most reliable sources of information, due to the rigor and care excercised in the investigation. Wenman Stawell, on the other hand wrote about the details of his family from the information he was told by his father. Lt. William Stawell, who left Ireland at a young age and could well have confused some of the details of his family. In light of the Declaration of Wenman Stawell, in which he meticulously recounts his lineage, it now appears that there are several disagreements of fact between his account of the family and Col. G.D.Stawell, on account of a dispute over the rightful title to the ancestral lands. In any event, further investigation in the Irish records will be necessary. Charlotte Stawell was said to be a beautiful but delicate woman who suffered from epilepsy (known at the time as "The Falling Sickness"). During a fit she fell on the fireplace and was severely burned and died124. More About Charlotte Rogers: Also Spelled: Eliza123 Children of William Stawell and Charlotte Rogers are:
Notes for Unnamed Stawell: Col. Stawell incorrectly assumes that this child, buried on 13 May 1798 is William Stawell.
110. Sampson26 Stawell (Jonas25, Jonas24, Anthony23, Jonas22, Thomas21, William20, Eustachius19, Edmund18, Thomas17, David16, Robert15, Walter14, Thomas13, Mathew12 de Stawell, Geoffery11, Geoffrey10, Mathew9, Geoffrey8, Henry7, Geoffery6, Adam5, Geoffery4 de Coveston, Adam3, Geoffery2, Adam1) was born September 1741 in Kilbrittain, County Cork128, and died 01 January 1819 in Kilbrittain, County Cork129. He married Hester Bernard 02 December 1775 in Kilbrittain, County Cork130, daughter of James Bernard. She was born in Bandon, County Cork, and died 17 May 1824 in Cork, Ireland130. Notes for Sampson Stawell: In 1788, Sampson Stawell was listed as Colonel of the Bandon Calvalry. Sampson, with his kinsman Eustace Stawell of Coolmain, were Captain and First Lieutenant, respectively, of the Kilbrittain Calvalry, with commissions dated 31 October 1796. Notes for Rev. Francis Stawell: Francis was named in the wills of his father, Sampson and his uncle William Stawell of Kilbrack, who bequeathed to him the greater portion of his landed property in the counties of Cork and Limerick after the death of his wife Catherine Stawell and his nephew James Ludlow Stawell, provided the latter had no male heir. He was also mentioned in the will of Catherine Stawell of Kilbrack, dated 23 May 1838 and on a codicil thereto dated 6 May 1839 in which she bequeathed to him the house and demesne of Kilbrack (in trust) and also the household furniture and other effects, together with a considerable sum of money. Francis entered Trinity College in Dublin as a Fellow Commoner on 15 April 1805, and took his B.A degree in 1808. On 20 May 1810 he was ordained Deacon an on 25 September of that year he was ordained as a Priest of the Church of Ireland.. On 9 May 1813, Francis was admitted as Rector of Templeroan and P.C. Doneraile. He remained there until 6 May 1834 when he resigned on succeeding to his brother's estates around 1824. According to the diary of Catherine Stawell, Francis was appointed Rural Dean. On 17 September 1844 he entailed the Madame and Kinsale estates on William Lionel Shuldam and George Cooper Stawell, in trust for George Stawell of Croberg, and his sons and their sons successively in Tail Male. Rev. Stawell was a considerable landed proprieter. He kept a pack of harriers which, from the size size of the hounds and the general turn-out of the horses and hunt-servants, resembled a smart pack of foxhounds rather than one of harriers. Upon his death, he left an estate of over 90,000 Pounds. He never married.
Notes for Col. Sampson Stawell:
As a Junior Captain, Sampson Stawell served with the 12th Lancers, which regiment he brought out of action at Waterloo when its senior officers had all been killed or wounded. He fought at the Battle of Vittoria with his kinsman, Lt. William Stawell. Wenman Stawell incorrectly states that Sampson Stawell had no brothers. In fact, he was one of eight sons and two daughters, including the Rev. Francis Stawell and Jonas Stawell, two other kinsmen mentioned in Wenman's Declaration. More About Col. Sampson Stawell: Burial: Rathclaren
Notes for Charles Stawell: Charles is mentioned in Wenman Stawell's Declaration as a friend and correspondent of Lt. William Stawell. Charles was a Captain of the Militia. While engaged in running an election he was killed by eating of a haunch of poisoned venison. His will was proven in the Prerogative Court of Ireland in Dublin in 1830. He died unmarried.

Notes for Catherine Creagh: Catherine (Stawell) was gifted with an unusually clear head and with great business capacity. Her voluminous diary embraces most of the questions of national, parochial, and family interest that occured during the greater part of her long life, and shows that she was consulted on matters both of of small and great importance by her neighbors for miles around149.

He married Elizabeth Green164 19 November 1817 in St Paul's Anglican Church, Halifax, Nova Scotia165, daughter of Benjamin Green and Susanna Wenman. She was born Abt. 1777 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and died 12 June 1854 in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia. Notes for Lieutenant William Stawell: According to Col. George Dodsorth Stawell in his book "A Quantock Family", William Stawell died and was buried in Cork, Ireland, in 1798, thereby making extinct the Barony of Stawell of Somerset, England. There is ample evidence that William lived well beyond that date as an officer in the British Army, serving in Spain, Southern France, Bermuda and Canada. He was also the immigrant ancestor of the Stawell family in Nova Scotia. William attended primary school at the Reverend Richard Hinches' in Cork. He got military education at Marlow College. His son, Wenman Blankley Stawell says that William was "a wild chap in his youth and his mother grieved over it." His father gave him his choice of profession, and he chose to become a soldier. He was appointed an Ensign of the 48th (Northamptonshire) Regiment of Foot on 19 September, 1811 at the age of 16. He was recommended for the rank by Lt. Col. John Brown in a letter to the King of the same date. On 27 January, 1813, Wiliam departed Portsmouth, England aboard the Ship "Queen", arriving in Lisbon Portugal on 14 February. There, as his military record states, "Lt. Stawell served in the Peninsular War with the 48th Regiment and was present at the Battle of Vittoria, Pyranees, Orthes, and Toulouse, for which he has the War Medal with four Clasps". Toulouse was the last major battle of the Peninsular War, and the British soundly defeated Napolean's forces. Ensign Stawell's regiment, however, was cut to pieces, he being wounded by a musket ball in his leg. The ball remained in his leg for the remainder of his life. William and about 300 of the survivors of his regiment departed for Templemore Ireland on 25 June 1814 aboard the British ship "Fox", and did not participate in the final battle at Waterloo. In a letter to the British King dated 14 October, 1815, the Rev. William Stawell recounted his son's heroism in the Peninsular War:
He also wrote a letter to the Duke of York on the same day to request a promotion for his son to the rank of Lieutenant:
The promotion was recommended by Major General H. S. Debrisay:
On 9 November 1815 the Duke promoted him to the rank of Lieutenant and assigned him to the 99th (Prince of Wales Tipperary) Regiment of Foot. From November 1815 to February 1816, his muster roll shows him absent without leave. On 24 February 1816, he rejoined the unit at Albany Barracks on the Isle of Wright. By this time, the regiment had been renamed the 98th Regiment of Foot. On 26 May 1816 William embarked from Portsmouth, England for Halifax Nova Scotia. He arrived on 14 June 1816, and was placed in command of Fort Clarence on the Eastern approaches to Halifax Harbor until 8 August 1817, when he left for St. John New Brunswick. On 24 October, 1817 (Wenman says 25 March 1817) he was placed on half pay due to a reduction in the regiment. He remained at this status until 1868, when his pension ceased due to his death. His daily pension amounted to 4s 6d for this period. Wenman says that after his marriage, Lt. Stawell established his homestead at Lawrencetown, a small village about 13 miles northeast of Dartmouth Nova Scotia. There four children Eustace, two who died in early childhood, and Wenman were born. Wenman attests that no other children were born. Between 1834 and 1836, Lt. Stawell and his family resided at Dartmouth. He had internded to return to Ireland as requested in a letter from his father and made preparations to depart, but his wife refused to go. Wishing not to abandon her, he decided instead to return to Lawrencetown where he resided until his death. He was, therefore, unable to actively fight for his inheritance in his home country167. In a report filed with the British Military authorities in 1847, William indicates that he had a wife and just two children, both capable of maintaining themselves. He also states that he has no employment. The 1851 Nova Scotia census for Lawrencetown lists William's household as 1 male between 30 and 40 (William Eustace), 1 male over 50 (William), and 1 female over 50 (his wife Elizabeth) William died in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia on 10 July, 1868. On his tombstone, he proudly proclaims his lineage and his military affiliations. I have a copy of the signature of Lt. Stawell from his pension application to the British War Office. Lt. Stawell was intensely proud of his military record. His headstone proclaims his Regiment, and he describes his occupation as "Lieut in the Army" in the baptismal record of his son Wenman. In his will, Wenman describes in great detail the military exploits of his father, suggesting that as a boy he was enchanted with his father's stories.
William was also aware of his apparent status as
heir to the Stawell Barony. His headstone clearly describes him as the only son of the Rev.

William Eustace Stawell was educated at Horton Acadamy, graduating in 1835. He taught school in Dartmouth, but eventually went insane. His mother and brother took him to the Asylum in Hartford Connecticut. His brother recalls that at this time he was "violent and dangerous, but afterwards became what is called harmless insane". He returned to live with his father in Lawrencetown until his father's death. On 28 April 1869, he was admitted to the Mt. Hope Insane Asylum and remained there until his death in 1876176. William Eustace Stawell is listed in the 1871 Nova Scotia Census as living at an Insane Asylum in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. He is mentioned in his father's will as having never married and died insane175. More About William Eustace Stawell: Burial: Mineville Nova Scotia

He married Anna Elizabeth Foster 14 February 1805. She was born 1783185, and died 15 November 1833 in Oldcourt, County Cork185. Notes for Jonas Stawell: This is likely the "long Jonas" referred to by Wenman Stawell in his Declaration. He was so named because he was six feet eight inches in height and a "close-fisted man". Jonas of Oldcourt is named in the will of his father, dated 13 June 1798. In it, he states that since his son has already been provided for through his parent's marriage settlement, he would receive only a silver cup and cover from the estate, as a token of love. He is also mentioned in the will of his uncle Sampson Stawell of Kilbrittain, dated 21 June 1815, and was one of the trustees named in the will of his uncle William Stawell of Kilbrack dated 20 April 1822. A very young Ensign Stawell is listed in 1782 as belonging to the Mallow Independants in which his father, George Stawell held the rank of Captain and his brother George's father-in-law John Longfield that of Lieutenant-Colonel. Jonas Stawell entered Trinity College in Dublin as a Pensioner on 29 April 1785, and received his BA in 1790. He was admitted freeman in the city of Cork on 9 December 1796. Jonas built the residence at Oldcourt on property he received from his father on his marriage. Oldcourt, like many of the properties belonging to the Stawell family, went relatively unmolested during the Whiteboy rebellions. Jonas was, nonetheless, attacked one day when he was riding along a lonely road by an armed Whiteboy, but being a man of very powerful physique, he speedily disarmed his assailant and, fastening him to his saddle, he conveyed him to the nearest police station. Children of Jonas Stawell and Anna Foster are:

Wenman Blankley28 Stawell (William27, William26, William25, Eustace24, Jonas23, Jonas22, Anthony21, William20, Eustachius19, Edmund18, Thomas17, David16, Robert15, Walter14, Thomas13, Mathew12 de Stawell, Geoffery11, Geoffrey10, Mathew9, Geoffrey8, Henry7, Geoffery6, Adam5, Geoffery4 de Coveston, Adam3, Geoffery2, Adam1)208 was born 24 April 1825 in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia209, and died 1900 in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia209. He married Mary Romans Bremner210 08 November 1849 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia211, daughter of John Bremner and Elizabeth King. Notes for Wenman Blankley Stawell: Wenman Blankley Stawell was named for his grandmother, Susannah Wenman, and for an associate of Lt. Stawell from the British Navy, Capt. Blankley, whose son Henry Blankley was drowned in Portsmouth while serving in the Royal Navy. Wenman attended primary school with of his aunt, Mrs. Howe, in Lawrencetown. In 1834, he attended Mr. Walker's school in Dartmouth and, He later attended Mr. Jameson's School in Dartmouth where his brother who was Assistant teacher, but they quarreled and he was subsequently sent, in 1836 to Mr. Twinning's school in the Parade in Halifax. After his marriage to Mary Romans Bremmer, Wenman and Mary lived with his father at his home in Lawrencetown. On 9 June 1860, "by the evil and regrettable conduct of my wife, I was driven insane", and Wenman was admitted to the Lunatic Asylum in Dartmouth. He was confined there until 22 May 1869. In 1862, his father broke up the household, being indignant with the continued immorality of his daughter-in-law. Henry and William were farmed out, while William Eustace and Elizabeth were taken to live with him at the home of George Hiltz in Lawrencetown215. In the Nova Scotia census for 1851, Wenman's household includes 1 male under aged 10 (William), 1 female between 10 and 20 years old 1 male between 30 and 40 years old (Wenman), and 1 female between 30 and 40 years old (wife Mary). He shared a house with his father William Stawell and family. In the 1871 census, Wenman is listed as living in Lawrencetown, alone214. Wenman Stawell left a will that reflects his wishes for his disabled son, his family tree, and an admonition to his executor not to honor any claims against his estate without extensive scrutiny. He also left his son Henry a document describing his father's fight to claim the Stawell Barony, and passing that right on to his son, Henry. In reading the documents written by Wenman, one gets the impression of a man obsessed with his heritage and the rights of his father. No doubt their inability to convince the English authorities of the legitimacy of their claims for the title and lands of the Barony contributed to his decline. One also gets a sense of the pervasive nature of Madness in the family. More About Wenman Blankley Stawell: Also Spelled 1: Winman Also Spelled 2: 03 August 1880, Whenman212 Baptism: 04 March 1827, St John's Anglican Church, Westphal213 Burial: Mineville Nova Scotia Will: August 1900, Halifax Nova Scotia Notes for Mary Romans Bremner: In his will, Wenman disowns Mary "..having been notoriously guilty of gross sin and the author of painful family misfortune, and having lived for years an abandoned life..." 217. After she left Wenman in 1860, it is unclear where she went. She is not to be found in any of the Canadian census records for 1871, 1881 or 1891. Wherever she was, she brought her children with her. The Census indicates that the Bremmer family name was found at this time only in the Lawrencetown area of Halifax, but was fairly common in Guysborough and Lunenburg counties. The German families in Lunenburg Township were close, and it is here that a curious coincidence may help explain how the Stawell and Schwartz family came to meet. In the 1871 Census, there is a woman named Sarah Bremner, aged 50 living in the same house as Benjamin Mclaughlin and wife, Eliza. Eliza would marry twice more, the last time to Joshua Schwartz as his second wife. Although there is no evidence that Sarah and Mary Romans Bremner are related, it would be ironic if Sarah Bremmer had a hand in bringing Mary's daughter Elizateth Stawell together as Joshua Schwartz first wife. Marriage Notes for Wenman Stawell and Mary Bremner: Wenman Stawell and his wife Mary lived together in Lawrencetown until about 1861, when she left him218. The 1871 Canadian census lists Wenman living in Lawrencetown alone. Children of Wenman Stawell and Mary Bremner are:
Notes for William Eustace Stawell: William had a very troubled life. In 1862 he was farmed out, along with his brother Hemry as a result of the breakup of his family. He was admitted to the Mount Hope Insane Asylum at Dartmouth on 28 April 1869, and remained there until his death in 1878. In the 1881 census, he is listed as living at the Insane Asylum in Dartmouth, aged 31. It is noted that he is from Lunenburg, probably because of the link with his sister Elizabeth Schwartz. The 1901 census indicates that he is now living at the County Poor Farm on Bissett Road in Dartmouth. His age is listed as 50, but no birth date is provided. His religion is now Presbyterian. In his father's will, his care is placed into the hands of his brother Henry "...having full confidence in his affection and care I commit to him the maintenance of his unfortunate brother". William Eustace Lived for most of his life at the Home for the Insane in Dartmouth Nova Scotia.

Notes for Henry William Stawell: Henry is listed as alive in 1901 and living in Halifax. He is mentioned by HL Hewitt in one of his articles about the history of the Eastern Shore in the Dartmouth Patriot. It is a curious coincidence that Henry lists his occupation in his Marriage record as a fisherman aboard the SS Mima; and that George Schwartz, Joshua's brother, married a woman named Mima Arenberg. More About Henry William Stawell: Occupation 1: 1893, Coffee House Manager260 Occupation 2: 1880, Fisherman, SS Mima261 Marriage Notes for Henry Stawell and Ellen McDonald: Three children were born of this marriage, according to the will of Henry's father. She married Joshua Schwartz 20 May 1876 in Lunenburg, Lunenburg County Nova Scotia264, son of George Schwartz and Sophia Walter. He was born 14 April 1852 in Lunenburg, Lunenburg County Nova Scotia265, and died 11 March 1939 in Lunenburg, Lunenburg County Nova Scotia. Notes for Elizabeth Stawell: Elizabeth is mentioned by her father, Wenman Blankley Stawell, in his will and in his "Declarations" document. Apparently, Wenman did not know the birthdate of his daughter as he lists her as being born in --- 1856. In 1862, Elizabeth was taken from her mother, along with her uncle William Eustace Stawell, to live with her grandfather at the home of George Hiltz268. There is some information with which to speculate how Elizabeth and Joshua met in spite of their social differences. Elizabeth's brother Henry, who was apprenticed out when his parents broke up, appears in the 1871 Census as a fisherman abord the SS Mima in Lunenburg, a boat that may have been owned by Joshua's brother. There is also the possibility that Elizabeth's mother (or Aunt) was living in Lunenburg at this time, and may have introduced Elizabeth to Joshua. Additional research may reveal more compelling evidence. The 1881 Canadian Census for Lunenburg lists Elizabeth as aged 23267. In her marriage license entry, she gives her name as Stowles.
