Johann Georg Schwartz of Germany and Some of his Descendants

      @1.  Johann Georg¹ Schwartz was born Abt. 1706 in Germany¹, and died Bet. September 1758 - 16 April 1760 in Lunenburg, Lunenburg County Nova Scotia Canada.  He married Margaret --- Bef. September 1752 in Germany².

Notes for Johann Georg Schwartz:

Johann George Schwartz arrived in Halifax Nova Scotia aboard the brig "Sally", one of Cornwallis' ships carrying the foreign Protestants on 30 May, 1752.  In the passenger manifest, he lists his origin as Franconia, his age as 46, and his occupation as farmer.  He and his wife do not appear in the Halifax Victualing List in 1752.  They do appear in the lists for February-April 1753.  His name appears in a Muster Roll of Col. John Creighton's Division in Lunenburg dated December 1753.  He appears with his family on the Lunenburg Victualing lists for June 1755, February-May 1756, and January-May 1757.

Upon arriving in the new town of Lunenburg, Johan Georg received a quarter acre "Garden Lot" in the first division, section F7.  In 1753-1754, he was allotted a thirty acre farm lot on First Peninsula, section B-3.  In 1754 he received a livestock allotment of one cow and one sheep.    He participated in an expedition to retrieve cattle left behind by the Acadians in 1756.

The thirty acre land allotment was not registered until 1760.  On 3 October 1763, his widow and children received an additional 300 acres in the First Division, section A-5.

Notes for Margaret ---:

The record of Margaret's death is open to speculation.  The death records of the Zion Lutheran Church, dated 29 March 1773 lists an Ann Margaret Schwartz, wife of George, even though she was, from 16 April 1760, married to Dominick Laurent.  There is no record in Lunenburg Church files of either Dominick or Margaret's death.

      @2.  Leonard Christopher² Schwartz (Johann Georg¹) was born 05 April 1754 in St. John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg, Lunenburg County Nova Scotia Canada⁴, and died 27 January 1816 in Lunenburg, Lunenburg County Nova Scotia Canada⁵.  He married Magdalena Kneller⁶ 28 May 1776 in Lunenburg, Lunenburg County Nova Scotia Canada⁷, daughter of Wilhelm Kneller and Sophia De Brenen.  She was born 06 March 1757 in St. John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg, Lunenburg County Nova Scotia Canada⁸.

Notes for Leonard Christopher Schwartz:

Leonard was named as Godfather of Leohnhardt Walter, son of Georg and Maria Magdelina Walter, on 13 September, 1783⁹. He served as the administrator of his son Martin's estate in 1800.

Leonard appears in the 1792 Poll tax for Lunenburg.  He paid a tax of 1 shilling.

Johannes Philip Andrews (Andreas) was an original settler of Lunenburg. There is no record of his arrival in Halifax.  He was granted a garden lot in the third division; section E-9 in 1753.  He appears in the Victualing List for Halifax in 1756.

The 1871 Census for Lunenburg Nova Scotia lists George as a farmer/fisherman living in the incorporated township of Lunenburg with his wife, Sophia and children Susannah, 23; George, aged 22; Joshua, aged 20; Jennet, aged 18; and Mary, aged 10.  He is listed as being born in Nova Scotia⁷⁶.

The 1881 Census lists him as a farmer, aged 65 with his wife, Sophia aged 56, and children George, fisherman, aged 27; and Mary, dressmaker, aged 19.

In the 1891 George is living in Lunenburg aged 75, with wife Sophia, aged 65,  Also living with them at this time is Jennet Schwartz, widow aged 30 and  her two children, Robert aged 11 and Flora, aged 8.  Also living there is James Maxnor.

In the 1901 census, George and Sophia are listed as living alone.

Joshua is the earliest Schwartz ancestor in our family about whom anything is remembered by contemporaries.  Several photographs exist of him at Lunenburg in his later years.

The 1871 Canadian Census shows Joshua, aged 20 living with his parents and siblings²⁰⁷.

The 1881 Census shows Joshua, fisherman, aged 27, living at Lunenburg with wife Elizabeth, aged 23 and children Mary, aged 2; and Lottie, aged 1.  All were born in Nova Scotia.  They indicate their religion as Methodist²⁰⁹.

The 1891 census lists Joshua as laborer, aged 37, living with wife Eliza (Hall), aged 40, and children May, aged 13; Lottie, aged 10; Bernard, aged 8, James, aged 6, Anne, aged 4, and George, aged 1.  Lodging with the family at this time are:  William McLaughlin aged 23 (Eliza's son by her first husband), James Hall aged 16, Fanny Hall aged 15, Bessie Hall aged 12, Maggie Hall aged 10 and Harris Hall aged 8 (Eliza's children by her second husband), Also lodging in the house is Elias Oxner aged 28.

According to family tradition, Lottie's mother died in childbirth and her father farmed her out to a local farmer named Gus Nickerson as a house cleaner. She was mistreated by Nickerson and later became pregnant by him. Her sister Alice May, who had earlier moved to Boston Massachusetts, sent enough money to pay for her passage to Boston in 1903. On 29 January, 1904, Lottie gave birth to Gladys Nickerson.

In addition to her sister Alice May , Lottie also had a half brother George, son of Lottie's father Joshua and his second wife Elizabeth (Dolly) Hall, who as of 1986 still lived in Mahone Bay in Nova Scotia.

The 1900 US Census for Gloucester Massachusetts shows Lottie C. Schwartz, aged 20 living with her sister's family.  She indicates she arrived in the US in 1899.  In the box for "Number of years in the US" the census taker has written 8/12, then overwrote this with "1".  This would suggest she actually arrived in the US about October or November of 1899.

Lottie indicates in her 1908 marriage record to Everett that this is her first marriage, and that she is 26 years old.  Mother's maiden name is Storel.

The 1910 US Census lists Lottie, aged 25, as having emigrated from Nova Scotia in 1898.  She is living with her husband and 2 daughters, Gladys and Harriett.  Interestingly, Lottie indicates she is in her second marriage.

In the 1917 draft registration records of her husband William Wainwright, Lottie's name is given as Charlottie.  This is likely her formal name³⁶⁵.

The 1920 US Census shows Lottie living in East Boston, aged 38.

The 1930 US Census lists Lottie, aged 50, living at 44 West Eagle Street, widow, with children Everett, 17 (born Canada, entered the US in 1913), Doris M, 6, Alice H, 21, and Charles E, aged 16.  She indicates she entered the country in 1901.  This is the first and only mention of Everett Wainwright Jr.

Following her husband's death, Lottie continued to live in East Boston. Her last years were spent in Billerica living with her daughter Doris.

Notes for Gladys C Nickerson:

As a child, Gladys' relationship with her mother and step-father was stormy, and she eventually disowned the Wainwright/Schwartz family entirely, living with her father's sister. Gladys maintained a relationship with her half brother Charles from 1938 through the 1940's, though she always refused to see or discuss her mother. She married Kenneth Mckeon and lived in Quincy until her death in 1982.

The record of Gladys' birth indicates she was the daughter of Augustus Nickerson and Nellie Wilson of England.

The 1910 US Census lists Gladys, aged 6 living at 4 Feare Street Gloucester with her mother and step-father.  She was born in Massachusetts.

The 1920 US Census lists Gladys, aged 14, living with her father at 17 Malden Street in Boston, Ward 6.

 According to oral tradition within my family, Lottie was farmed out to the Nickerson family to work on a farm, and somehow became involved with Gus Nickerson.  My Aunt thought he was the head of the house but I am not sure he was not one of the children.  In any case, she came to Boston, Suffolk County Massachusetts in 1898, living with her sister May.  Gus followed her in 1901 and in 1904 Lottie had Gladys Nickerson out of wedlock.  In 1908, Lottie married William Everett Wainwright. 

The 1910 US Census shows Lottie and Gladys living in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts with her new husband.  The family never kept tabs on Gus. Lottie and William had several children of their own, including my father, Charles Everett Wainwright⁴⁴⁵.

the 1930 US Census lists Gladys C McKean, aged 26 living on Winthrop Avenue in Revere Massachusetts with husband Kenneth McKean, aged 31 and daughter Beverly, aged 2 1/2.  Kenneth owns his home, worth $9500.  Kenneth is an inspector on the Street Railway.

As time went on, Gladys had a falling out with her mother, and left her to live with her father.  My father was one of the few people in my family who had any relationship with her at all during the 1930-1940s. They would meet on the street out of sight of the rest of the family. She married Kenneth McKeon and lived most of her life in Quincy Massachusetts as a Nurse.  She died around 1982.

My older sister, who had met Gladys as a child, found out about Gladys's funeral and decided to attend.  Of course none of the folks knew who she was, but one of them noticed a peculiar mark on her ears (a small hole just ahead of the ear canal), and immediately showed her his identical mark!  It turns out that just about all her children had it as well.

      191.  Clarence Henry⁷ Schwartz (James Joshua⁶, Joshua⁵, George Francis⁴, Casper³, Leonard Christopher², Johann Georg¹) was born Abt. 19 November 1903 in Lunenburg, Lunenburg County Nova Scotia Canada, and died 07 February 1928 in Shubenacadie, Hants Co., Nova Scotia Canada.  He married Gladys Emily Ziinck Abt. 1926 in Lunenburg, Lunenburg County Nova Scotia, daughter of Noah Zinck and Hilda Coolen.  She was born 03 June 1906, and died 14 October 1974 in Halifax Nova Scotia.

Notes for Clarence Henry Schwartz:

The 1911 Canadian Census lists Clarence Schwartz, born 1902, living with his grandfather Reuben Dorey in a large extended family⁴⁵³.  No listing for mother Lelia. 

In his obit it states that he was killed in a mill accident at the age of 24 years. He had moved there about a month before for work. He is survived by wife nee Zinck, Bayside, a son, and father Robert, of Lunenburg. Funeral was from Knox Presbyterian Church with burial in Clearland.

According to the record of his death, Clarence' parents were James Joshua Schwartz and Lelia Dorey

After the early death of her husband, Gladys was treated very badly by her in-laws and she moved away to New York and never contacted his family again.

Notes for Donald James Joshua Schwartz:

Donald was also a carpenter and was forced to take early retirement due to ill health.

His son, Clarence, recalls that during the time of prohibition he had a colorful past, as did many in Lunenburg, as a bootlegger. He had a concealed hole in the basement of the house in which he would store the booze. He would transport the liquor from the shore to the house in the wheelbarrow and then conceal it in the basement. About 1955 he sold the Schwartz house in Lunenburg to Harry Tanner who in turn sold it to Delma Allen.

Clarence also said that he worked as engineer on a fishing boat for Zwicker & Co., then as caretaker at the Golf Course and for Homer Zwicker.
