@1. John2 Row (John1) was born 13 October 1607 in Lamerton Tavistock, Devon, England1, and died 09 March 1661/62 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts2. He married Bridget Jeggles3 13 July 1640 in Salem, Essex County Massachusetts, daughter of William Jeggles and Mary ---. She was born 10 June 1619 in Southwold, Suffolk England4, and died 02 May 1680 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts5.
Notes for John Row:
John Row and his wife lived for a time in Salem before settling in Gloucester. He was, however, living there in 1651. Babson says John Sr. bought land in East Gloucester from Thomas Drake in 1651, who acquired it from Nicholas Norton of Weymouth, who bought it from William Vinson, to whom it was sold by George Norton, original grantee.
John Rowe settled at the Farms section of Cape Ann, some two miles from his nearest neighbors, but his presence was soon felt. Less than two years after he settled there, he was in trouble with the authorities.

There was no disposition of the case. It would appear that Perkins was not adored by all in the community as other persons were similarly charged6. |
John was not one to keep his thoughts to himself. Less than three years later the court again was taking action against him, because of a statement he made:

"Court held at Salem 26: 4mo: 1656 |
|
"42 John Row : of Gloster being presented for saying if his wife weere of his mind he would sett his house on fire & Run away by ye light and ye divill shoud take ye farms & Speaking ye same a second time added that he would live noe longer among such A Company of hell Hounds : The prssnmt~ was acknowledged in a writing presented to this Court. Sentence of Court is that he shall pay a fine of 20s Alsoe to make a Confession at ye next towne meeting at Gloster of ye words spoken by him, wch if he refuse shall appeare at ye next Court in Salem & pay 2s 6d fees of Court. |
John must have had a hard time carving a working farm out of the rocky soil of his chosen area. That he did well in the 10 years he toiled there is evidenced in the inventory of his estate valued at over 205 Pounds.

Notes for Samuel Row:
There is no record of Samuel's death in Vital Records. In his will, dated 5 January 1743 and proved 14 February 174379, he leaves his wife Dorcey (sic) the bulk of the estate as long as she remained his widow. When she remarried or died, the estate was to be divided into equal shares, with a double share going to oldest son Jamey, the rest to wife Dorcey, son Jonathan and daughter Judeth. On 9 December 1743, all parties (except Dorcas, who was named but did not sign) agreed to a new settlement of the estate. Mentioned in this agreement were Jonathan Row, Jamey Row, Judeth Elwell, Abigail Row (wife of James Row), and Samuel Elwell. The agreement was signed by James Row, Jonathan Row, Judeth Elwell and Samuel Elwell. The fact that Dorcas was not present may indicate that she had recently died and the fee tail provision of Samuel's will was being activated.
Notes for Dorcas Ingersal:
Dorcas' father, Samuel was driven from Falmouth by Indian hostilities. He went to Charlestown, where he baptised the first five of their eight children including Dorcas, in 1694. The family arrived in Gloucester shortly after 1700.
