@30. Johannes Kornelius7 Johnsen (John6 Olsen, Ole Adrian5 Eliasen, Elias4, Elias3 Pedersøn, Peder2 Fordelsøn, Fordel1 Ingebrigtsøn) was born 06 May 1872 in Osmo, Hemnes Nordland Norway46, and died 19 October 1958 in Hemnesberget, Nordland Norway47. He married (1) Elen Anna Ohlsen Bef. 1895, daughter of Johan Ohlsen and Ellen Aandal. She was born 02 May 1870 in Aandal, Romsdal Norway47, and died 10 June 1944 in Trondheim, Sør Trondelag Norway47. She died Unknown.
Johannes obtained the lease for the Osmo Farm from his brother Peder for 2300 Krone on 22 May to 13 June 1903. He lost the farm as a result of the bankruptcy of his Bakery business in 1905. Through his son Femmer, he purchased it from the trustees in 1906 and purchased it back from his son for 1000 Krone on 20 June 1924 to 2 September 1926. Johannes is listed in the 1875 census with his family in Hemnes at the Osmo Farm. In the 1900 Census, he is living in Trondheim as a Baker living with wife Anna, born 1870 in Molde and children Hedevig, born 1895, Femmer, born 1896 and Asstri, born 10 February 1900 Also living at the farm is Johannes' brother Lorents, born 1879. From early letters written by Johannes and other family members, we have a picture of his early years. In one letter, dated 22 July 1895 to his brother Jens, he writes from Korgen of the birth of his first child Hedvig. He writes that they had not been expecting her for another month. Since in many of thes letters he writes to ask to borrow money, one gets the impression that he was an entrepreneur. From a letter written to Jens by sister Else, we know that Johannes spent much of the winter months of 1895-1896 longline fishing at Lofoten on the Norwegian Coast. According to another letter, this one written by Lornts Osmo to brother Jens, Johannes wife Anna was furious at his decision (the letter says "Hot around her ears" - "hed om orene" in Norwegian). By December 1896 he had moved to Trondheim. Johannes owned a Bakery in Trondheim that operated for about 10 years. He became involved with Henriette Johnsen, a bakery worker who bore him a child in 1905. The bakery and his marriage both failed and in 1907 he came to America. Henriette Johnsen followed him to Boston in September 1907 on a ticket paid for by him. In 1914 he started another bakery at 119 Green Street in Jamaica Plain (Boston Massachusetts). After Henriette arrived, things did not go so well between the couple, and Henriette married Louis C Hornow in 1917. She remained close to the Osmo and Dame families until her death in 1948. The record of his entry into the US has not been found, but it was certainly before September 1907. A search of the Ship Arrival lists in the Ports of Boston and New York has failed to turn up Johannes' immigration record. Johannes initially used the name John Johnson in America. In the Cambridge, Massachusetts City Directory for 1908, a John Johnson, baker is living at 583 Main Street. He appears again in Cambridge in 1911 living at 81a Hampshire Street. He is not listed in the Directories of Boston, Brookline or Cambridge in 1909, 1910, 1912 or 1913. In 1914 John Osmo, Baker is listed in the Boston City Directory living and working at 119 Green Street Jamaica Plain. He is similarly listed in the directories of 1915 through 1923. In 1926 the entry shows him working at 39 Corinth Row in Roslindale, and living at 15 Astivus(?) road Jamaica Plain. He is not listed after this. In a letter Johanes wrote to his brother Jens at Hemnes in September 1908 he says he was finding a little work, living at 13 Market Street Cambridge, and was hoping to receive several hundred Kroner from a creditor in Trondheim. In December 1908, he wrote that he had started a job as foreman at a Swedish Bakery in Cambridge Massachusetts and had moved to 22 Jefferson Street in that city52. The 1910 US Census shows John Johnsen, baker boarding at 81 Hampshire Street in Cambridge. He speaks English. He is married. He indicates his immigration was in 190751. There is no record of Johannes in the 1920 or 1930 US Census In 1914 Johannes wrote to his wife Anna in Trondheim asking her to send two of their children- Hedvig the oldest to accompany Johanne the youngest over to him. In the Passenger Manifest of the Bergensfjord on 12 October 1914, Hedvig and Johane list their father's address as 119 Green Street in Jamaica Plain. Johannes traveled home for a short visit his family in Norway in 1923. In the Passenger Manifest of the Stavangefjord arriving at Ellis Island on 2 November 1923, Johannes' name has the number 190760 and the date 6/11/26 scribbled above his name. He is listed as 51, a married baker. His wife, Anna Osmo in Trondheim is his closest relative. He is visiting a friend, Ms. Freeman of Boston. He lists a previous visit from 1907 to 1923. He intends to remain in the US for 4 years. He is 5 feet 5 inches tall with brown hair and blue eyes. He appears in Oslo Emigrant files as an emigrant from Oslo to New York on 28 August 1926 aboard the Stavangerfjord. "Not from Oslo" Johannes returned to his native country in 1926 and bought back ownership of the Osmo farm from his son Femmer. He built a new Farm House to replace one that burned shortly after his return, While there, his housekeeper, Anna Pedersen bore him a daughter Judith. Anna moved with her daughter north to Bodo. Judith died of Cancer before she was married. Johannes sold the farm in 1939 and moved to the village of Hemnesberget to live. In his later years, according to his grand daughter Anna Dame, he became a very disagreeable fellow and lived a hermit’s life until he died at the Hemnes Sick Home at Hemnesberget on 19 October 1958. He is buried at the Hemnes Church. More About Elen Anna Ohlsen: Notes for Henriette Johnsen: Henriette was a worker at the Bakery of Johannes Osmo in Trondheim. She bore a son Henning by him and this precipitated the breakup of Johannes' family. Henriette followed Johannes to Boston but left her son behind to be raised by her mother. She continued to work with Johannes at his Bakery on Green Street in Boston. A Henriette Johnsen is listed in the Emigration records of Norway. She is listed as departing 3 September 1907. She was born in 1886 and was headed for Boston via Christiana on the Scandinavian Line. The Ellis Island Record for the Ship Manifest for the Hellig Olav, arriving in New York from Christiana on 17 September 1907 shows Henrietta Johnsen in Steerage. Her ticket was paid for by Johannes Johnsen. Her contact is an uncle Konrad Ringstrad in Roxbury. She is 5 feet 4 inches tall, brown hair and brown eyes. Her closest relative in Norway is Emelie Pedersen from Trondheim. In 1909, Henriette returned to Norway for a visit. She is listed in the Passenger Manifest of the Hellig Olav on 1 April 1910, arriving from Christiana as a second class passenger. This manifest entry is misfiled but has been located on the microfilm on pages 1274-1275. She is 23 years old. single, lists her mother, Henriette Lohrsen as her closest relative. Final destination is Boston. She paid her own fare, and lists a previous visit to the US from 1907 to 1909. It is interesting to note that the manifest itself indicates that the passengers were transferred from the SS United States. Need to check out why this is indicated. A search of the US Census for 1910, 1920, and 1930 has failed to locate Henriette Hornow or Henriette Johnsen in Massachusetts. Sometime before 1920 she married Louis Hornow, a second generation German from New York. Henriette returned to Trondheim in 1920 for the Confirmation of her son and returned to Boston soon afterwards. Her return was through Ellis Island on 21 December 1920 aboard the Bergansfjord. Here she is listed as Henriette Hornow, a US citizen. She lives at 3 Wolsey Square Jamaica Plain. Henriette played a prominent role in the lives of the Dame and Wainwright families in Boston through the thirties and forties. She and her husband are remembered by several family members during and just after the War. Several family members remember her name as Gertrude. Children of Johannes Johnsen and Elen Ohlsen are:
Notes for Sofie Osmo: There is no living family recollection of this individual. Odd Meringdal, in his "The Aandahl Family" only lists her name and her probable place as third in the birth order. Sofie is mentioned in a letter sent from Else Osmo to Jens Osmo written on 4 April 1899: (translated by Svein Osmo)
Notes for Lilly Osmo: We today have only photos of this hauntingly beautiful young girl, who bears a striking resemblance to several other members of the family. One of the photographs in the compilers possession indicates years of her birth and death. Oral tradition holds that Lilly died of Tuberculosis, and that the family maintained strict secrecy about this information fearing that their chances of coming to America would be in jeapordy.
