Notes for Rev. Josiah Marshall:
Josiah graduated from Harvard University in 1720. He was named first School Master of the town of Malden in 1720, but departed for a ministry. In 1723 he returned to Harvard to obtain his Master’s degree. In 1724 he became Minister in Falmouth Massachusetts. After separating from his wife, he withdrew from the position. In 1734, he moved to North Carolina in an unsuccessful attempt to obtain another ministry and trying to escape the scandal of his marriage. He returned to Boston about 1738 and was made a Schoolmaster at Mendon Massachusetts in that year.

Elizabeth was living on Cornhill in Boston when the Great Fire of March 1760 swept through downtown Boston and destroyed her home. Her name is listed among those who lost their belongings. Her affidavit lists personal articles valued at 29 Pounds, though she was allowed only 3 pounds, 19 shillings and 6 pence for her loss33.
Elizabeth is mentioned in the will of her third husband, Henry Snow as his "beloved and dutiful wwife Elizabeth". Also mentioned is Elizabeth's son Ferris Shirley, "now living in Merrimack New Hampshire" and her daughter by Zarrubabel, Mary Soper Marshall.
Her fourth marriage, to Luke Howell, was performed at the same time and at the same place as that of her daughter Mary Soper Marshall to Thomas Giles.

Swan, in his "Marshall Memorial", suggests that Zerrubabel is an illegitimate son of Josiah, and was raised by his sister Mary Soper. Perhaps he was the cause of the ugly scandal of his father's marriage.
