Peeter Lurvy of Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts and Some of his Descendants

 Generations One thru Four

 Last Updated 11 March, 2008

Generation No. 1

@1.  Peeter1 Lurvy1 was born Abt. 16531.  He married Mary ---1 Bef. 1679 in Ipswich, Essex County Massachusetts2

Notes for Peeter Lurvy:

Peter Lurvey, the immigrant ancestor, had arrived in the New World by 1679. William Monroe Newton, in his "History of Barnard Vermont" quotes Dr. W.A.Dewey who assisted him in compiling his book3:

"The name Lurvey is a good transliteration of the German "Loeve", which is a common name among German Jews. There is a tradition in the Lurvey family that the first Lurvey who emigrated to Massachusetts in the 17th century [Peter Lurvey] was of Jewish descent, and came from Archangel in Russia. It is noticeable that many of the Lurveys have Old Testament names such as Reuben, Levi, Samuel, Isaac, and Jacob, and that their noses tend to be aquiline"

      38.  Peter4 Lurvey (Peter3, Peeter2, Peeter1 Lurvy) was born 14 August 1739 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts173, and died 08 August 1775 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts174.  He married Sarah Wharfe 29 March 1764 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts175, daughter of Arthur Wharfe and Martha Lee.  She was born 09 April 1742 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts176, and died Abt. 1846 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts.

Notes for Peter Lurvey:

The dates of birth and baptism are noted to be inconsistent.  I suspect that the date of birth is the more accurate.

Peter Lurvey enlisted as a private in Capt. David Warner's 1st Company on 19 July 1775 and was stationed at Gloucester for the defense of the seacoast.  He answered the alarm bells in Gloucester Harbor on 8 August 1775 when the British Sloop of War "Falcon", under the command of Captain John Linzee, entered the inner harbor chasing a West Indiaman that had come within her range.  Lurvey, along with several members of the Town's militia took up positions to protect the grounded Indiaman and pinned down members of a British boarding party sent to cut her out of the harbor.   The "Falcon"  shelled the town for four hours before some of the landing party could retreat from the fight.  In the melee, Peter Lurvey was shot and killed.   He was one of two men killed that day178.

Peter was one of the noted residents of Dogtown.  His residence, #25 Common Road, is well documented.

Notes for Jacob Lurvey:

Sawtelle, in his "The Gilley Family of Mt. Desert Island", misstates the ancestry of Hannah's father Jacob Lurvey.  He indicates that this Jacob must have died because another Jacob was born on 26 May 1745, and that therefore, Samuel must have been Jacob's father (?).  However, this individul is named James, not Jacob in the records, and, further, this James died within a year of his birth. Jacob did not die and he is the most likely individual to have been the parent of Jacob.

Moreover, Sawtelle missed a generation as it was Jacob's son Jacob who married Hannah Boynton.

Jacob appears on a Revolutionary war muster roll of Capt. Daniel Warner's company stationed at Gloucester 19 July to 31 December 1775 as a private in defense of the seacoast.  He is also  listed on the muster roll of Captain Jonathan Dodge's Company, Col. Jacob Gerrish's Regiment dated 1 April 1778 for services from April to July of that year226.

Notes for Rebecka Hunter:

It is not certain whether Rebecka Cole, widow, who married  Jacob Lurvey Jr.  is the same as Rebecka Hunter, who married Solomon Cole in 1747. The vital records are ambiguous on this point.  There were three Soloman Cole's who lived in Gloucester duirng this time,   One of these published intentions to Mary Foster on 13 December1746, another married Mary Hibbert on 29 November 1749. a third published intentions to Rebecka Hunter on 23 January 1747.  None of these Solomon Cole's were born in Gloucester.  One fragment of evidence that favors the connection is that Solomon's sister Mary Cole married Ebenezer Lurvey, Jacob's uncle.

Arthoud and Helliwell, in their article "The Peter Lurvey Family of Essex County Massachusetts, Maine, and Vermont", suggest that the Solomon Cole that married Rebecca Hunter was born in Beverly on 17 February 1711/12, the son of Samuel and Mary ---.

@51.  Capt. David4 Lurvey (Jacob3, Peeter2, Peeter1 Lurvy) was born 04 May 1748 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts231, and died Bet. 1778 - 1810 in at sea(?)232.  He married (1) Lydia Holland Abt. 1767 in New Gloucester, Cumberland County Maine, daughter of Richard Holland and Sarah Cunningham.  She was born 13 July 1750 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts233, and died Bef. December 1770 in Woodstock, Cumberland County Maine234.  He married (2) Abigal Davis 24 September 1774 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts235, daughter of James Davis and Abigail Whitrege.  She was born 16 May 1749 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts236, and died Aft. 1810 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts237.

Notes for Capt. David Lurvey:

There is uncertainty as to David Lurvey's early life. He is supposed to be the son of Jacob Lurvey and Sarah Benet, the same David Lurvey who married Abigail Davis in 1774.  Lapham, in his "History of Oxford Maine" reports that Captain David Lurvey married Lydia Holland in New Gloucester, Cumberland County Maine sometime before 1769, and died at sea shortly after their two children were born.  He further reports that David's wife Lydia died even earlier.  In 1770 the children of David Lurvey were baptised at the Fourth Parish (Lanesville) in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts.

David Lurvey served as Private in Capt. Daniel Warner's company from 1 March to 31 May 1775.

David is not listed in the 1790, 1800 or 1810 US Census for Massachusetts, though David's second wife Abigail Lurvey does appear in each.  The 1810 census indicates she is a widow.  It is likely that David spent most of his time at sea, and likely was lost.

      79.  Abraham4 Lurvey (Jobe3, Peeter2, Peeter1 Lurvy) was born Abt. 1756 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts353, and died Bef. 12 January 1787.  He married Sarah Pulcifer, daughter of John Pulcifer and Sarah Hunter.  She was born 22 August 1755 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts354, and died 11 September 1812 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts355.

Notes for Abraham Lurvey:

Abraham is supposed to be the son of Jobe and Mary, though no solid evidence can be found for this connection.

Abraham could be the son of one of four relationships in Gloucester

Peter Lurvey and Ruel Haraden

Joseph Lurvey and Abigail Ingersal

Eliezer Lurvey and Sarah Pool

Jobe Lurvey and Mary Cunningham

All four couples were in the active childbirth phase of their marriage during the years 1736-1756, and each has gaps in childbearing that could have been filled with an undocumented birth around 1750-1756.  Of the three, the best studied by genealogists is Eliezer Lurvey, one of the founders of the Fifth Parish Church.  The documentation of his children is poor, and there was an article in NEHGR commenting on the order of their birth, with no mention of Abraham.  The possibility that Joseph Lurvey is Abraham's father is  intriguing because of the large gap between two of this documented children between 1743 and 1754.

A case can be made for Abraham as the son of Job and Mary as well, if he followed the accepted normal naming conventions for children of New England,   His second son, traditionally named for the grandfather, is named Job, and his third daughter was named Mary, same as the grandmother.

Arthaud and Helliwell make the case that Abraham is probably he son of Jobe and Mary Cunningham.
