James Lane of Casco Bay, Cumberland County Maine and Some of his Descendants

Generation No. 1

      1.  James¹ Lane was born in London, England, and died 13 September 1688 in Casco Bay, Cumberland County Maine¹.  He married Sarah White² Bef. 1651 in Malden, Middlesex County Massachusetts or Casco Bay, Maine³, daughter of John White and Mary ---.  She was of Kennebec Maine.

Notes for James Lane:

James was one of four brothers, three of whom settled in New England.  He was a Turner by trade, and was in possession of property he inherited with his brother John in England.  The family came to New England in 1655, and James worked at his trade in Malden, Middlesex County Massachusetts with his brother Job.     On 19 November 1660, James appointed his brother as his attorney and removed with his family to Casco Bay Maine. He was killed by Indians there on 13 September 1688.

      2.  John² Lane (James¹) was born 1653 in Malden, Middlesex County Massachusetts⁵, and died 24 January 1737/38 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts⁶.  He married Dorcas Wallis Abt. 1680 in Falmouth, Cumberland County Maine⁷, daughter of John Wallis.  She was born 1661 in Casco Bay, Cumberland County Maine, and died 09 February 1754 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts⁸.

Based on the birth records of his children, John arrived in Gloucester between 1692 and 1694.

      4.  Samuel² Lane (James¹) was born Abt. 1664 in Casco Bay, Maine¹⁸, and died 30 December 1724 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts¹⁹.  He married Rachel --- Abt. 1707 in Yarmouth Maine¹⁹. 

Notes for Samuel Lane:

Samuel and his brother Henry were attacked by an Indian who had spent the night at their house in North Yarmouth Maine.  He afterward fled to Gloucester where he was granted land in 1708.

      8.  James³ Lane (John², James¹) was born Abt. 1682 in Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland County Maine²⁰, and died 20 April 1751 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts²⁰.  He married (1) Ruth Riggs 25 October 1710 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts²¹, daughter of John Riggs and Ruth Wheeler.  She was born 04 November 1690 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts²², and died 18 August 1711 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts²³.  He married (2) Judith --- 16 April 1715 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts²⁴.  She died 29 August 1770 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts²⁵.

Notes for Daniel Lane:

Daniel was a aboard the Dalton, a Privateer that sailed from Newburyport in 1776.  He was captured by the British Sloop Raisonable and imprisoned with his brother-in-law Asa Witham in the Old Mill Prison in Plymouth England.  Daniel escaped from the prison and stowed away aboard an outbound vessel bound for Virginia.  From there he walked back to his home in Gloucester, a journey that took him several months⁹⁸. 

      19.  Job³ Lane (John², James¹) was born 08 February 1704/05 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts¹⁰⁸.  He married Mary Ashby 26 November 1734 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts¹⁰⁹, daughter of Ebenezer Ashby and Marjory ---.  She was born 22 September 1710 in Beverly, Essex County Massachusetts¹¹⁰.
