and died July 1679 in Ipswich Massachusetts. Notes for Robert Hale: Robert Hale came to the
Massachusetts Bay Colony from England around 1630. In 1632, he and his wife Joanna are
listed as founding members of the First Church in Charlestown. Robert was one of this Church’s first

Hale: Rev. John Hale was the
first minister at the First Parish Church in Beverly, ordained on 20 September
1667. He graduated Harvard College
1657. He served as Chaplain in
Phipa's expedition against Canada in 1690. One of his acts about
which he became particularly noteworthy was his involvement in the Witchcraft
delusion of 1692. At first, he
supported the process of seeking out and prosecuting accused witches. However, after his wife Sarah was
accused, he had a change of heart.
In 1697, after her death, he published a book "A Modern Inquiry into the Nature
of Witchcraft", in which he condemned those who took a leadership role in the
prosecutions10.
The inscription on his
tombstone reads:
“Here lies buried ye body of ye Reverend John Hale, a pious and faithful
minister of ye gospel and pastor of ye first gathered church of Christ in the
town of Beverly who rested from his labours on ye 15th day of May, Anno Domini
1700 in ye 64th year of his age." Notes for Rebecca Byles: Rebecca is listed in

---: There is no record of
the maiden name of Elizabeth Hale.
However, in the parish records of the First Parish Church in Beverly, there is
an entry for a William Cleark who married Elizabeth Stone25. The register indicates children born
between 1768 and 1697. If this is
the same Elizabeth, then she is the daughter of Nathaniel Stone. Children of Robert Hale

She was born 23 June 1693 in Newbury Massachusetts29,
and died 02 February 1753 in Newbury Massachusetts30. Marriage Notes for
Samuel Hale and Apphia Moodey: There is a question
whether this Samuel Hale is the same as the one descended from Thomas Hale,
Glover, of Newbury. All genealogical
records indicate that he died, unmarried around 1722. There is, however, a clear record of this
marriage in the Newbury VR. Children of Samuel Hale

Gilman: There is conflicting
information as to whether Elizabeth was the daughter of Col. John Gilman, or his
wife. Her tombstone indicates she is
the daughter. Her marriage record to
Robert indicates she was "Mrs. Elizabeth Gilman of Exeter New Hampshire". The compiler supposes that the tombstone
is correct39. Children of Robert Hale

Notes for Nathan Hale: Lt. Nathan Hale was the
young Continental Army officer who was hanged as a spy by the British in New
York in September 1776.
After graduating Yale
College, Nathan began a career as a teacher in Connecticut. At the outbreak of
hostilities, Nathan received a commission as Lieutenant in the Continental Army
and had an unremarkable military career until one day he overheard his
commanding officer say he was in need of someone to spy on the British. His friends and Commanding Officer
advised him that he was much too honest to be a spy but he would not be
dissuaded. He was captured shortly
after arriving in British held Long Island.
He is, arguably, one of the most famous of our Revolutionary War
patriots; being forever remembered for his final words, "I only regret that I
have but one life to give for my country."

Everett Hale: Edward was a Unitarian
minister and one time Chaplain of the US Senate.
He is most well known as the author of "Man without a Country", and many
other magazine articles. Edward Everett Hale was a full third cousin of Harriett Hale, and it is likely that she was aware of her connection to the Everett family. Thus, when Harriett's grandson was born, in 1853, it seems likely that the name Everett came to mind to co |
