John Blatchford was was said to be from the west of England and came to New England via Newfoundland. He always asserted that he was on the Thames when three oxen were roasted on the ice on 19 January 1716, and supposed himself to have been about 14 years old at the time. Babson writes that he had four sons and two daughters5.

Notes for John Blatchford:
John Blatchford, a seaman, was captured by the British early in the Revolution and found his way home only after an incredible journey that took him around the world, in and out of slavery. He wrote of his experiences in 1788 in a manuscript that has been several times reprinted and which is summarized below.
In June 1777, John shipped as Cabin Boy aboard the Hancock, a Continental Ship commanded by John Manley. Eight days out, the ship was captured by the British ship Rainbow and her crew taken to Halifax. While a prisoner there, John attempted an escape during which he killed a man. For this he was sent to London for trial as a murderer. The court dismissed the charge but saw fit to sell him to the East India Company as a slave. He was sent to the East Indies aboard the Princess Royal, along with 82 other Americans who also had been sold into slavery. After a journey of about 36 weeks, the ship arrived at Bencoulen on the island of Sumatra in June of 1780. He worked in the Pepper Fields, and attempted two more escapes. After the first he was condemned to death for killing a guard but this order was set aside owing to his young age and he received 800 lashes instead. During his second escape he trekked through wild jungle to the opposite side of the island where at the Dutch port of Croy he was able to board a merchantman and travel via Batavia, St. Helena, London, Antigua and Montserrat. On his next leg, to Philadelphia, his French ship was captured by two British sloops and he was again imprisoned- this time on a prison ship in New York Harbor. There he was sent aboard a Cartel ship with other French prisoners to St. Maloes. After traveling by land to Port l'Orient, he signed on with an American Privateer, the Buccaneer from Beverly and helped capture six prize ships before the end of the war. He signed onto another Beverly Ship bound for Lisbon and, after picking up a load of salt, finally returned home to Beverly on 9 May 1783, having spent almost the entire war as a prisoner, fugitive or slave11,12.
John is said to have died in 1794 in Haiti, as a member of a merchant crew.
