William Lander of Boston Suffolk County Massachusetts and Some of his Descendants

 Last Updated 22 October 2006

Generation No. 1

@1.  William1 Lander was born Bet. 1780 - 1789 in Ireland, and died Aft. 1827.  He married Hannah Pierce 30 April 1805 in Boston, Suffolk County Massachusetts1, daughter of Solomon Pierce and Eunice Farrar.  She was born 17 August 1786 in Townsend, Middlesex County Massachusetts2.

Notes for William Lander:

William appears in the 1830 US Census for Ward 6 in Boston.  The family consists of 1 male 5-10 (Francis), 1 male 10-15 (William), 1 male 15-20 (John), 1 male 50-60 (William Sr.), 1 female 30-40 (unknown at this time) and 1 female 40-50 (Hannah).  The two youngest girls, Helena and Sarah are not accounted for in the household.

According to the 1880 Census record for his son William Pearce in California, this William was born Ireland.  The death record for his son Francis A indicates he was born in England which at this time is not contradictory.

The probate record for a William Lander of Boston dated 5 May 1835 is not the same individual unless he remarried between 1827 and 1833, the time of his death in New Orleans.  The petitioner was William's wife Caroline.  (I need to check into this possibility further.)

Another William Lander died "a pauper" in Roxbury according to Roxbury VRs and is also not likely this William.

Notes for Hannah Pierce:

There were two Hannah Pierce's born in Townsend Massachusetts within 4 months of one another.  One was born 12 April 1786 of Jonathan and Hannah Perham and the other was born 17 August 1786 of Solomon Pierce and Eunice Farrar.  One of these married John Clements from Townsend on 5 March 1805, a second remarkable coincidence since the other married William Lander in Boston on 30 April 1805.  My decision to associate this Hannah with Solomon is based on the fact that Hannah's sister Eunice was living in Boston in 1824 and had married an Irishman.  According to the Town Selectmen, Solomon was not a contributing member of the town, and apparently died a pauper.  This connection is admittedly weak.

The death record of Hannah's daughter Helena Francis indicates Hannah was born in Townsend New Hampshire.  This can be explained because the boundaries of the Town of Townsend were redrawn when the boundary between New Hampshire and Massachusetts was changed, and a part became the town of Brookline New Hampshire.  Hence, many references to Townsend in early records mention Townsend as in New Hampshire.

The death record of Hannah's son Francis A Lander indicates her name as Hannah Peirce, born in Townsend Mass.  This is of interest because the death certificate of Harriett Kenney Lander, wife of Francis, who died on the same day as her husband, indicates her mother was also named Peirce, suggesting maybe they were cousins..
